As a beach photographer in Florida, I’ve had the privilege of capturing hundreds of engagement sessions over the years. There’s something timeless and deeply emotional about photographing two people in love with the ocean as their backdrop. Whether it’s the soft breeze, the golden light, or the sound of the waves, beach sessions tend to bring out genuine connection in couples. And while I always encourage spontaneity and movement, having a few go-to poses helps couples feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. That’s why I wanted to share my top 5 poses for romantic beach engagement photos, based on years of experience and the natural, loving energy I see in couples every day.

1. The Forehead Touch
This is usually where I begin. I’ll have the couple stand close, with their foreheads gently touching, eyes closed. It creates an intimate moment without the pressure of smiling directly at the camera. It’s also a great way to help couples slow down and just be present with each other. Often, a soft smile or small laugh will follow naturally, which makes for a beautifully candid shot.

2. The Walking Shot
I always ask couples to walk slowly along the shoreline, hand in hand. Sometimes they look at each other, sometimes they look ahead. I might ask one person to pull the other in for a playful spin or a quick kiss. These moments are dynamic and relaxed, and the movement helps ease any nerves. The beach is the perfect place for this because the setting is so open and light-filled.

3. The Lift
When the moment is right, and the couple feels up for it, I suggest a playful lift. It could be a pick-up-from-behind hug or a full lift with feet off the ground. Not everyone is comfortable with this one, and that’s okay. But for those who are, it brings out a lot of joy and laughter, which translates beautifully in photos.

4. Sitting in the Sand
I like to give couples a break partway through the session by having them sit down on a blanket or directly in the sand. It’s a chance to get closer, snuggle in, and just talk for a moment while I photograph from a distance. These seated poses feel less formal and more grounded. Sometimes the wind catches a strand of hair, or someone leans their head on the other’s shoulder, and it just feels real.

5. The Back Hug
One of my favorites is when one person wraps their arms around the other from behind. It creates a strong visual of connection and protection. Whether it’s a quiet hold or they’re laughing and teasing each other, it’s a versatile pose that works in almost any light. Against the backdrop of the ocean, it becomes even more emotional.

I always remind my couples that posing is more about creating opportunities for connection than it is about perfection. The most beautiful images come from moments when you forget the camera is there and focus on each other. The beach, with all its natural light and space, gives us the freedom to create those moments without forcing them. If you’re thinking about an engagement session, these top 5 poses for romantic beach engagement photos are a great place to start—and I’ll be right there to guide you every step of the way.
